Practical Information for Yoga Students
These are guidelines for your yoga practice. You will benefit more by following these simple and sensible guiding principles. Please read through them and if you have any questions, please ask.
As a beginner, you're welcome to any of the classes on the Yoga Schedule. They can get hot and sweaty. Don't worry, the emphasis is to go at your own pace, according to how you feel. This is the real yoga, starting to learn how to listen to yourself, so you know how to work with your body and senses.
Please wear loose or stretchy clothing (no belts, buckles or zippers), i.e. active wear. Wear comfortable clothing, students often find it helpful to wear a top that stays close to the body, so it does not cover your face when your torso is inverted, like in forward bend or inversion. Long sweat pants ARE NOT recommended for Hot Yoga.
Practice on an empty stomach. Allow 3-4 hours after a full meal before practicing. Eat lightly within one hour prior to class, if at all.
You will sweat during practice; to avoid dehydration drink enough water beforehand or afterward. Drinking during practice is ONLY advised during HOT YOGA classes, intensives OR when pregnant. Only sealed containers of water allowed in yoga room.
Be on time. If you are attending Michael's Yoga class, please keep in mind that they can get crowded, so you will want to show up 20 minutes early, to make sure you get a spot. This shows respect for your own practice and for the space that the others who are present expect. New students should arrive earlier to become familiar with the area.
If you have new concerns or issues, please discuss these with the teacher prior to class starting.
Talking during class is generally not helpful to yourself or kind to other students. Be here & now concentration is important. Become more self-aware by quieting the mind and body.
Please keep body and feet clean when attending class. Please do not attend class with open wounds. No perfume (as some students are highly sensitive and/or allergic to strong scents). Please clean up after yourself. Laundry bins are located outside the studio. Please use recycling bins for all bottles.
We advise you to purchase your own yoga mat for personal hygiene reasons. Shedding yoga rugs or breaking/flaking yoga mats are not advised in the studio for hygienic and environmental reasons.
Please use recycling bins for all bottles.
Leave beepers, cell phones
and pagers off or outside. Please finish up your conversation
before entering the lobby and turn your ringers off.
After Class:
Water, water and more water!!
Consider a warm bath with Epsom salt or sea salt for sore muscles.
A little goes a long way - try a little practice every day.
Yoga classes are not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. Do bring a sense of humor. If you don't laugh, you'll cry!
